Claddagh [Clatter]: The Claddagh (Clatter) Designs (correctly pronounced as "clod-ah", is truly an endearing symbol of Irish culture and sentiment. It derives its name from the Town of Claddagh near Galway in which it is traditionally believed  to have originated.  Richard Joyce, a native of Galway, is believed to be the original  designer of the Claddagh Ring. Released from slavery by his Moorish master in  1689, he returned home to  Galway where he set up a small shop in the Claddagh and began to make the ring that has helped to make this town famous.

The Claddagh design depicts a heart topped with a crown, and held by two hands — one on either side. The hands signify friendship, the crown loyalty, and the heart love. The phrases that are usually associated with the Claddagh ring is "With these hands I give you my heart and crown it with my love." and  "Let love and friendship reign."

Claddagh rings were  frequently used as wedding bands. Today, the ring is worn extensively by both men and women across Ireland and increasingly in the USA.  It is traditionally worn either on the right hand with the heart turned outwards to show that the wearer is unattached or with the heart turned inwards to show he or she is "spoken for."  If the wearer is married, it is worn on the left hand, with the heart turned inward.

Claddagh rings, bands, earrings and pendants have been growing in popularity as time passes due to of its unique design, its peculiar history, its sentimental appeal and its close association with the ancient Claddagh of Galway. An ever increasing awareness of Irish heritage has also made the wearing of Clatter Rings even more popular.

Gram: A measurement weight unit. Specifically a metric unit of mass equal to one thousandth (10-3) of a kilogram.  A U.S. cent (penny) weighs almost exactly 2.5 grams.  To get a "feel" of the weight of a 10 gram ring just put 4 US pennies in the palm of your hand and "heft" it.  Feel the weight of the pennies and you'll know exactly what a 10 gram ring or cross would feel like.

Lost Wax:
This refers to the lost wax method of investment casting. For centuries articles of jewelry have been made by a technique that is called lost wax casting. This method is basically done by taking a wax or plastic model and encasing it in a plaster like material called investment. This investment is then heated in an oven to high temperature and the model melts away and evaporates.  This is known as the burnout cycle. Once the model is eliminated, metal is melted and "cast" into the cavity where the model once was (hence the name "lost wax"). The metal can be injected into the mold by a number of different techniques (steam, vacuum, centrifugal force, etc.)

Rhodium: A hard, durable, silvery-white metallic element that is used to form high-temperature alloys with platinum and is plated on other metals, such as silver,  to produce a durable corrosion-resistant coating.  A rhodium finish adds protection and lasting life and luster to ordinary silver jewelry.  A rhodium finish is not necessary on our Sterling Silver because we use a special tarnish resistant silver alloy using germanium which essentially blocks the formation of tarnish and, therefore, has minimal maintenance requirements.  Read about tarnish resistant silver here: Tarnish Resistant Sterling

Sterling Silver:  An alloy of 92.5 percent silver with copper or another metal.  The alloy (combining of metals) adds substantial hardness and strength to the silver.  We use tarnish resistant .925 Bright Sterling. It was discovered in 2000 and is the best silver alloy (germanium) in existence today.

Wholesale:  Traditionally this term has referred to the sale of goods in large quantities by a manufacturer to a distributor who would then add on a profit "markup."  The distributor then resells the products to a retailer such as a neighborhood retail or department store.   The definition of "wholesale" has taken on new meaning with the advent of the Internet and the increased ability it provides manufacturers enabling them to sell small or large quantities directly to the public.

In our case the distributor and the retail store are bypassed.  We have no distributors or retail stores.  MyCelticRings.Com is an Internet based manufacturer.  We make and sell fine jewelry products, at true wholesale prices, directly to consumers everywhere.  There are no middlemen.  Quality remains high, but our selling prices are substantially lower due to the major savings we have in business overhead.  Who benefits?  You do.
